Hiking on the Magaliesberg mountain range at Mountain Sanctuary Park

Mountain Sanctuary Park

Views from the Mountain Sanctuary Park in the Magaliesberg

Mountain Sanctuary Park is located approx 1.5 hrs from JHB and PTA and is a perfect weekend getaway for hikers, birders and all who love quiet and tranquil settings. There are various hikes available as well as clean water pools in the mountains. To conserve the serenity, there is a limit to the amount of visitors allowed in the park on a daily basis. The walk to the top of the Magaliesberg range is well worth it, the views from atop is reward enough for the long walk.

The single-chamber Wonder Cave, deep under the Witwatersrand, is situated in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, one of the world’s richest hominid fossil sites. The cave, which has been open to the public since 1991, is home to fossils of rodents, frogs, lizards and birds, and beautiful rock formations.

The cave has its own colony of bats.

The cave has stalactite and stalagmite formations up to 15 metres high, a high percentage of which are still growing. The deep cave is accessible to visitors by elevator and is located within the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve which is in the Cradle of Humankind.
